Every two minutes, a woman dies from preventable causes related to pregnancy or childbirth.
Most of these deaths happen in communities affected by poverty, conflict and crisis — where fragile health systems, insecurity and rising costs make it harder for women to access the care they need.
For many women, this means going through pregnancy without check-ups or support. It can mean giving birth in an overcrowded clinic without enough supplies, or at home without a trained health worker by their side.
When Batoul went into labour with twins, two hospitals turned her away because they did not have the staff or resources to care for her.
Finally, she reached the CARE-supported Al-Amal hospital in northwest Syria, where skilled healthcare workers were ready to help.
Her twins, Ahmed and Mustafa, were born just minutes later. They were dangerously underweight and struggling for oxygen. After 20 days in an incubator, both babies survived.
As their grandmother said: “The babies would have died without the help of this hospital.”
Many maternal and newborn deaths are preventable.
